In the late 1960s, Ferdinand Piëch set out to take Porsche to the top of motorsports and the Porsche 908 made that possible. The 908 represented a new generation of Porsche prototypes. Initially built as a coupe, but with the new technical regulations of 1969 that also allowed open-top cars, Porsche built a much lighter 908 Spyder: the 908/02. This was perfect for races where a lot of downforce was needed, such as the 1000 km of the Nürburgring and the Targa Florio. The first Porsche 908's started their races in the 1968 season at Monza and were initially unsuccessful, but in the end Porsche managed to achieve more than 50 victories and more than 100 podiums with the 908. The most memorable victory with the 908/02 Spyder is without a doubt the 1-2-3-4-5 victory at the 1000km Nurburgring in 1969. The 908/02 Spyder is one of the most successful Porsche race cars in history.
In the successful racing history of the Porsche 908/02 Spyder, well-known drivers have taken the wheel, including Vic Elford, Jo Siffert, Jacky Ickx, Richard Attwood, Hans Hermann and Brian Redman.
This 'Sportomotive Original' fine art print shows the Porsche 908/02 Spyder #6, which led Jo Siffert and Brian Redman to victory in the 1000km Nurburgring on June 1, 1969.
During an interview on Goodwood Brian Redman said :
"In 1969 Jo Siffert and I won 5 of the 10 races with Porsche and in '70 Porsche won the Manufacturers Championship. After that, I retired to South Africa, because I thought I was going to be killed. I mean, all my friends had been killed. I said to my wife: “We're going” and so we went. That was in November. But then, in March I said to her: “We're going back". It shows you can take the man out of the race car, but you can never take the race car out of the man.
